'Vanilla Sky' Wakes Up in First Place on DVD & Video Rentals Chart
It's no lucid dream. The Tom Cruise mind trip Vanilla Sky claimed the top spot on the VHS and DVD rentals charts for the week ending May 26, according to the Video Software Dealers Association.

Director Cameron Crowe's "cover" of the 1997 Spanish picture Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes) pulled in $11.59 million in combined DVD and VHS rental revenue in its first week, or about a third of the $33,004,909 it grabbed in its first week in theaters. It went on to gross $100,618,344.

Not far behind was the all star Rat Pack remake Ocean's Eleven, which lifted $10.52 million in its third week on rental shelves. George Clooney and company have made off with $39.14 million so far, or 21.3% of the $183,417,150 they took at the box office.

Cruise was near the top of the chart with another picture—albeit only as executive producer. Abre los ojos director Alejandro Amenabar's The Others landed in third place with $10.08 million, down 19.3% from its opening week. The Nicole Kidman thriller has risen to $22.67 million, 23.5% of the $96,522,687 it spooked out of theaters last year.

Off a scant 9.1%, Snow Dogs mushed into the No. 4 spot with $6.30 million for $13.31 million after two weeks. The Cuba Gooding, Jr. family picture is still in theaters, but its rental total equals 16.4% of the $81,110,575 it's earned at the box office so far.

Ripping into fifth place, From Hell gutted $5.22 million from rental outlets, down 20.3%. The Johnny Depp-vs.-Jack the Ripper flick has slashed its way to $11.83 million after two weeks, more than a third of the $31,602,566 it extracted from theaters last fall.

How High starring rappers Method Man and Redman debuted at No. 6 on revenue of $4.82 million, 15.5% of the $31,178,740 that the higher education comedy lit up at the box office over the holidays.
