Around
the World Round Up
by Kenan
Bresnan
Proving it's the most
bankable franchise in history, Jurassic
Park III devoured $16,263,808
from 1,422 engagements in 10 territories,
excluding three Latino markets where
results were not available. Joe
Johnston's adventure actually defeated The
Lost World: Jurassic Park's bows
in a few countries and outran The
Mummy Returns in a majority of
the territories. Still feeding in Japan, Pearl
Harbor continues on its run past
the $200 million mark, while A.I.:
Artificial Intelligence combats Sen
to Chihiro no kamikakushi (Spirited
Away) in Japan along with the
WWII epic.
The newly introduced
Pteranodons certainly flocked in
audiences in the U.K., as the film
swallowed $6.5 million on 463 screens,
including sneaks. That number is only 16%
below The Lost World and
ahead of Mission: Impossible II's
and Gladiator's
mega openings last year; its also UIP's
seventh-biggest debut. Coming in as the
second highest preem of all time and
Universal's biggest, Jurassic
Park III hauled in $3.2 million
on 320 in Mexico. That number is short
only to Dinosaur. In
Argentina the film 'saured to $1.1
million on 75 says Universal, which is
11% below The Lost World,
but 34% up on The Mummy Returns
and is twice as big as the original.
Beating The Lost World by
7% the dinopic grabbed $1.4 million from
274 screens in Brazil.
Ranking as Universal's
second highest debut ever in South Korea,
the film took $1.9 million on 86, topping
the previous JP by 5%
and repped UIP's third-best bow ever. The
Sam Neil/William Macy starrer nabbed
$891,075 on 28, including last weeks
previews, in Singapore. That's the
territories largest non-holiday debut of
all time. IN Malaysia, the film stole
$561,847 on 41, claiming Universal's
third largest opening ever there.
Meanwhile, Pearl
Harbor continues its foreign
crusade by capturing $8.5 million over
the weekend, elevating its foreign total
to $168.7 million, thanks to Japan's
$17.5 million in nine days, slipping an
acceptable 32%.
Pearl Harbor came
in third behind A.I.: Artificial
Intelligence which dropped an
excellent 23% nationally, where it lost
30-40 screens in the provinces, making
$4.2 million, skyrocketing its total to
$48.3 million. Both films fell to newbie Sen
to Chihiro no kamikakushi (Spirited Away)
which grabbed an impressive $13.1 million
in three days on 321. The film, which is
an animated fantasy by director Hayao
Miyazaki, brings good tidings for Final
Fantasy: The Spirits Within
because Final Fantasy is
also an animated fantasy and is native to
Japan.
Also opening in Japan was Dr.
Dolittle 2 forked up a poor
$581,000 on 168, which isn't surprising
considering the original on took $12
million out of a foreign total of $149.2
million. The Eddie Murphy starrer has
mediocre starts in Belgium, South Africa,
Switzerland, and Thailand, but tailed off
only 21% in Brazil, minting a dandy $1.5
million in 10 days. The animal comedy as
a modest $17.9 million from 28 markets.
Proving it's not human, Shrek
already has $13,880,782 in
Australia where it hasn't left the top
position and defeated The Lion
King to become the all-time
highest grossing animated film, $3.2
million in 10 days in Spain, $6.5 million
in South Korea, $9.6 million in France,
$9.3 million in Germany, and the highest
of all its territories, $24.2 million in
the United Kingdom in its fourth. The
film debuted in Israel to a perfect
$411,000 on 31 screens. That lovable ogre
grabbed $10.7 million from 24 territories
this weekend totaling $90,621,862.
Looking to join Pearl
Harbor, The Mummy
Returns, and soon-to-enter Shrek,
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider should
enter the $100 million club next weekend
as it stole $8 million last weekend,
cumeing $84 million in 21 markets. The
Angelina Jolie starrer snared a terrific
$955,000 on 32 in Hong Kong, $596,000 on
97 in The Netherlands, and $329,000 on 50
in Denmark.
A Western spoof, Der
schuh des manitu, galloped into
its native Germany with a superb $4.7
million on 551, whipping Evolution's
$1.9 million on 654, and Cats
& Dogs' surprisingly tame
$814,000 on 542.
Evolution also
moved into France with a reasonable $1.5
million on 559, hoisting its weekend
tally to $6.9 million in 36 markets,
bringing its foreign total to $28. 1
million. It could finish around $60
million almost doubling the domestic
$37.2 million.
Spy Kids has
done poor in practically every country,
save the United Kingdom. It took a
pint-sized $580,00 on 541 in France,
bringing its total to a pathetic $16.7
million in 21 territories.
Swordfish logged
on in Spain with a fishy $712,000 on 272,
but that should climb next weekend. It
also grabbed an encouraging $516,000 on
250 from sneaks in the United Kingdom.
After scoring a phenomenal
$58.4 million in the U.K. and a lusty $8
million in Spain, Bridget Jones's
Diary continues to roll out
great figures. In Sweden it grabbed
$581,000 on 58, in Norway it took
$465,013 on 49, and in New Zealand it
grabbed an excellent $207,000 on 13. It
has $74.6 million from just seven
countries, including Australia's $1
million from sneaks.
Still bringing in the
dough, The Mummy Returns raked
up $1.2 million on 807 screens in 17
countries, excluding Latin America. It
only has one more country to take;
Romania on August 24.
Next weekend, Jurassic
Park III takes on The
Philippines, Spain, Switzerland, and
Taiwan, while Bridget Jones's
Diary hopes to score in
Australia and Denmark. In Japan it looks
to be another huge weekend, as The
Planet of the Apes unspools on
Saturday. The Planet of the Apes actually
makes its world premiere in Hong Kong, a
day before its domestic release, and
opens in Taiwan on Saturday. Three major
hits debut in Australia; Bridget
Jones's Diary, Enemy at
the Gates, and Final
Fantasy: The Spirits Within.
Begining its foreign campaign, Scary
Movie 2 releases in France along
with Sweet November. In
Brazil See Spot Run debuts
along with About Adam. Blow,
Down to Earth, and Just
Visiting are among the films
release in Germany this weekend. And in
the United Kingdom, Dr. Dolittle
2 and Swordfish look
to claw at JP3.
Bridget Jones's
Diary, Jurassic Park III,
and The Planet of the Apes
should all grab pole position in there
opening territories. Shrek should
continue to lead France, while Swordfish
could dethrown Der schuh
des manitu in Germany.
These are my predicted
foreign totals for the selected films:
Pearl Harbor: $216
million
The Mummy Returns:
$213 million
Lara Croft: Tomb
Raider: $141 million
Swordfish: $85
million
Shrek: $259
million
Bridget Jones's
Diary: $115 million
Moulin Rouge: $82
million
A.I.: Artificial
Intelligence: $311 million
Dr. Dolittle 2:
$67 million
Cats & Dogs:
$110 million
Final Fantasy: The
Spirits Within: $174 million
