'Breakin'' Not Electric But as Expected
HOLLYWOOD (Box Office Mojo)—Following the rules of counter-programming, Sony's Screen Gems division went up against the brute force of Troy with Breakin' All the Rules and scored okay results.

The $10 million romantic comedy wooed $5.1 million from 1,318 theaters to rank fifth for the weekend and within studio expectations. According to Sony's research, the audience skewed female (60%) and black (65%), while 52% were under the age of 25 and 80% rated the movie in the top two boxes, "excellent" and "very good."

The material was relatively new territory for star Jamie Foxx—who alternates between straight-up comedy and drama—though not for his co-stars Gabrielle Union and Morris Chestnut, who both appeared in Screen Gems last foray into the genre, 2001's Two Can Play That Game. That movie opened to $7.7 million at 1,297 theaters on its way to $22.2 million.

Other similarly appealing romantic comedies have fared better as well, including Deliver Us from Eva ($6.6 million debut at 1,139 theaters) and Brown Sugar ($10.7 million at 1,372).
