Analysis: Sex and the City opened to $57 million in May 2008 on its way to a cumulative gross of $152.6 million, reaffirming that a ton of money can be made with a movie appealing almost entirely towards women. As expected, a sequel was fast-tracked, and, exactly two years later, Carrie and the gang are back on the big screen for Sex and the City 2.

Historically, sequels to female-driven movies have not replicated the successes of the originals. From parts one to two, Bridget Jones dropped 43 percent, Miss Congeniality dropped 55 percent, and Legally Blonde dropped 7 percent. These were accompanied by a perceived decrease in quality as well. Box Office Mojo readers gave each of the originals a "B," while the sequels received either a "C" or "C+." It's also important to note that the first Sex and the City benefitted from pent-up demand, coming four years after the television series ended, and the novelty of seeing the characters on the big screen. These factors will be diminished for the sequel, no matter how well liked the first movie was.

May is a month frequently devoted to big budget blockbusters geared towards young males, and this May is no different (Iron Man 2, Robin Hood, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, etc.). This should be to the advantage of Sex and the City 2, which is positioned as the first must-see alternative for the other half of the population. Scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, Carrie and company could make a serious statement at the summer box office.
