Arthouse Audit: 'City Island' Expands to Lead Limited Releases
In its seventh weekend, City Island expanded to take first place among limited releases, with Bollywood crime caper Housefull and previous limited champ The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo falling just behind it. New movies from Michael Caine and Nicole Holofcener also performed fairly well, while The Good Heart and Mercy failed to spark much interest.
After six weeks of relatively decent numbers, City Island more than tripled its theater count this weekend, making $733,338 at 269 locations. The comedy has tallied just under $2.1 million, though based on its per theater average of $2,726 this weekend, it may have finally reached its level of saturation.
Housefull pulled in $642,156 at 82 theaters for a per theater average of $7,831. This is the best start for a Bollywood movie since My Name is Khan opened to $1.9 million in February, though that movie had the strength of Fox Searchlight behind it. It's also the best opening for an Eros International release since Love Aaj Kal made $1.2 million in its first weekend last July.
After spending the last three weekends at the top of all limited releases, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo fell to third place, down 18 percent to $510,509 at 199 theaters. Through its seventh weekend, Dragon Tattoo has accumulated $4.6 million. Among other holdovers, The Secret in Their Eyes was off six percent to $337,164 at 45 theaters for a total of $1.07 million, while documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop was up 27 percent to $186,262 for a $651,870 total.
Crime thriller Harry Brown, starring Michael Caine, opened to $173,353 at 19 theaters for a decent per theater average of $9,124. The newest movie from writer-director Nicole Holofcener, Please Give, had the best per theater average of any movie this weekend, grossing $118,123 in five theaters for an average of $23,625. It wasn't as potent as her last movie, Friends with Money, which earned $589,332 at 28 theaters in its first weekend. Touching Home, featuring Ed Harris, debuted in three theaters and banked an estimated $47,300. Finally, IFC-distributed horror movie Human Centipede grossed $12,424 at one location.
Two other new releases didn't perform quite as well. The Good Heart, starring Paul Dano and Brian Cox, managed just $5,955 at five theaters for a measly per theater average of $1,191. Mercy (2010), starring James Caan and Scott Caan, fared even worse, grossing $1,776 at one location.
