Friday Report: 'Insurgent' Trails 'Divergent'
The Divergent Series: Insurgent opened nearly on par with its predecessor, while The Gunman and Do You Believe? each started off with less than $2 million on Friday.

Insurgent opened to an estimated $21.3 million, which is slightly lower than Divergent's $22.8 million on the exact same day last year. When it comes to sequels, dropping a bit from one installment to the next is actually above-average. Still, if there is going to be a bump, it usually takes place between the first and second installment, so it's a bit disappointing that it didn't happen here. If Insurgent plays like Divergent, it will earn just over $50 million this weekend.

At the start of its second weekend, Cinderella (2015) fell 59 percent to an estimated $9.53 million. That drop is roughly on par with Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Maleficent, but is noticeably off from Oz The Great and Powerful. If Cinderella follows the same pattern as Oz and Alice, it will finish the weekend with around $34 million.

In third place, The Gunman opened to a terrible $1.77 million. That puts the Sean Penn action flick in the same range as notorious 2015 flops Blackhat ($1.4 million), Mortdecai ($1.5 million) and Unfinished Business ($1.8 million). Among similar action movies, this debut is identical to Bullet to the Head's $1.74 million. It's likely that The Gunman ends up with around $5 million this weekend.

Liam Neeson's Run All Night plummeted 64 percent to an estimated $1.4 million. The movie will wind up in the $4.5 million to $5 million range this weekend.

Kingsman: The Secret Service had another fantastic hold, easing 24 percent to $1.28 million. To date, the comic book adaptation has racked up an impressive $111.2 million.

Playing at 1,320 locations, Do You Believe? opened in sixth place with $1.25 million. That's a fraction of God's Not Dead's $2.8 million debut, and is also well below Left Behind's $2.4 million. If it gets a boost from churchgoers on Sunday, the faith-based drama could hit $4 million for the weekend.

Weekend Projections

1. Insurgent - $50 million

2. Cinderella - $34 million

3. The Gunman - $5 million

4. Run All Night - $4.7 million

5. Kingsman - $4.6 million

6. Do You Believe - $4 million
