DVD: 'Fahrenheit,' 'Aladdin,' 'Shawshank:' Get Busy Buying
In the same week that the all-star Shark Tale dominated the box office, the animated feature that popularized celebrity voice talent and pop culture references finally makes its DVD debut. Aladdin, starring the voice of Robin Williams as the genie, gets special edition treatment from Disney. Part of the studio's animation rebirth in the early '90s, the picture grossed $217.4 million in theaters to become the No. 1 movie of 1992. Adjusted for ticket price inflation, that would equal around $330 million today.
Celebrating its 10 year anniversary with a new special edition, The Shawshank Redemption was shown little love in theaters, grossing $28.3 million to rank No. 51 in 1994. It went on to become the top VHS rental of 1995 and one of the most beloved pictures of recent years with its call to "Get busy living, or get busy dying."
Two controversial titles from the summer hit shelves on the same day—Fahrenheit 9/11 and Saved!. On its first day alone, Fahrenheit 9/11 reportedly sold about 2 million combined DVD and VHS units—about 70% of that figure, though, was bought by rental stores. It's expected to be the best selling documentary ever by the end of the week—just as it claimed the highest-grossing documentary title with its $119.1 million in theaters. Carrying the tagline "Got Passion? Get Saved," Saved! tried to stir things up with its take on Christianity, but the result was a modest $8.9 million at the box office.
