Friday Report: '22 Jump Street' Schools 'Dragon'
22 Jump Street got off to a commanding lead in this weekend's battle of the sequels. How to Train Your Dragon 2 could make up ground throughout the weekend, though it will almost certainly fall short of $60 million.
22 Jump Street opened to a massive $25 million on Friday. That's the second-biggest R-rated comedy debut ever behind The Hangover Part II ($31.6 million). It's also nearly double the first movie's $13.2 million start.
The audience skewed younger (56 percent under 25), which suggests the movie will be very front-loaded this weekend. Still, it should wind up with at least $60 million.
In second place, How to Train Your Dragon 2 earned an estimated $18.5 million on Friday. That's significantly higher than the first movie's $12.1 million start. Unfortunately, it's lower than Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted ($20.7 million), which was the last DreamWorks Animation sequel to open in June.
It can be tough to predict how animated movies are going to play throughout the weekend, and Dragon could theoretically get a Father's Day bump. Still, it would be surprising if it earned over $55 million this weekend.
The Fault in our Stars took third place with an estimated $6.35 million (down 76 percent from its incredible opening day). For the weekend, Fault should earn around $19 million.
In fourth, Maleficent dipped 43 percent to $5.8 million. On its 15th day in theaters, the movie passed $150 million.
Edge of Tomorrow rounded out the Top Five with $4.56 million (down 57 percent). For the weekend, it could earn around $16 million (a very good hold).
X-Men: Days of Future Past took sixth place with $2.6 million. In the process, it passed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to become the highest-grossing Summer 2014 release. Sometime today, it will be the first to cross $200 million.
