'Red Riding Hood,' Steve Carell Comedy Make Spring 2011 Shift
Warner Bros. made two updates to its Spring 2011 slate today, and both recalled successes from Spring 2010.
Red Riding Hood leapt forward six weeks from April 22 to Mar. 11. The picture is a new spin on the classic tale, and it's said to be a supernatural thriller in which the title character's (Amanda Seyfried) village is tormented by a werewolf. Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) directs from a script by David Johnson (Orphan), while Leonardo DiCaprio is among the producers (he also did Orphan).
The shift positions Red Riding Hood similarly to Alice in Wonderland (2010), which delivered blockbuster numbers in early March this year. Red Riding Hood will face-off with Battle: Los Angeles and Mars Needs Moms (in 3D).
Filling the April 22 slot made vacant by Red Riding Hood is the new Steve Carell comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. The movie's about a forty-something man (Carell) whose world unravels when his longtime wife (Julianne Moore) cheats and wants a divorce, leading him to become the protege of a thirty-something player (Ryan Gosling). Emma Stone and Marisa Tomei co-star.
Steve Carell , who will next be heard in Despicable Me and seen in Dinner with Schmucks (both in July), last starred in Date Night. Like Crazy, Stupid, Love., Date Night was a marriage-themed comedy, and it has grossed a solid $97.4 million to date since its April release. Crazy, Stupid, Love. will debut opposite African Cats, Born to Be a Star and {lnk46718}Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family{/lnk}.
In other release date news, Fox Searchlight moved Never Let Me Go forward. The drama directed by Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo) and featuring Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan will now start its limited platform release on Sept. 15, instead of Oct. 1.
