Around-the-World Roundup: 'Expendables' Back on Top
Similar to the domestic box office, international business was fairly slow this past weekend. The Expendables 2 wound up in first place thanks to a very strong $25 million seven-day opening in China. Based on the figures that are currently available, the movie has already earned over $158 million overseas, and is on pace to easily pass the original movie's estimated $171 million foreign total within the next week.
The Bourne Legacy added $12.9 million from 47 markets this weekend for a new foreign total of $78 million. It debuted in first place in South Korea with an excellent $4 million, but was a bit underwhelming in Brazil with $1.1 million (though both are new highs for the Bourne franchise). The movie is set to expand in to 16 territories, including Germany, next weekend.
Thanks to a $12.9 million haul, The Dark Knight Rises pushed its overseas total past $600 million this weekend. Worldwide, the movie was at $1.041 billion through Sunday, which ranks 10th all-time. By the end of its run, it could move up to seventh place ahead of the second Pirates of the Caribbean movie ($1.066 billion).
Brave grossed an estimated $10.3 million this weekend for a new total of $254.9 million. Since it's currently out in 98 percent of the international marketplace, it's unlikely that the movie will ultimately get past $300 million overseas, which would make it the first Pixar movie since Cars to miss that mark.
Prometheus earned $9.97 million for a new total just shy of $250 million. Most of this was thanks to a strong second weekend in China, where it added $7.8 million for a solid $19.1 million total.
Two major movies opened in the United Kingdom this weekend prior to their U.S. release: Dredd 3D took first place with $1.7 million, while Anna Karenina debuted in third with $1.4 million. Dredd opens nationwide in the U.S. on September 21, while Anna Karenina gets a limited release on November 16.
Two foreign titles had strong debuts this weekend. Japanese four-quel Bayside Shakedown 4 Final debuted to $13.4 million, which is a bit higher than its predecessor (which ultimately earned over $85 million). Fox International title Raaz 3D grossed $8.8 million, most of which came from a strong $8.65 million debut in India.
