Around-the-World Roundup: 'Tangled' Edges Past 'Hornet'
Update: Estimates placed The Green Hornet on top for the weekend, but Tangled moved ahead with a dramatically improved actual number to lead another underwhelming weekend at the foreign box office. Tron Legacy also bounced back with a strong opening in Germany, while Black Swan and The King's Speech held extremely well. Overall box office was once again down, as the Top Eight movies combined were unable to match Avatar's $95.2 million from the same weekend last year.

Expanding to around 80 percent of the international marketplace, Tangled earned $17.2 million over the weekend. A little under half of this came from a huge $8.1 million start in the United Kingdom, which only trailed sequels Toy Story 3 and Shrek Forever After among 2010's animated offerings. Tangled also continued to score steady grosses in Australia ($1.4 million), Brazil ($1.3 million) and Germany ($1.2 million). With its $254.3 million foreign total, the movie is set to open in Spain, Hong Kong and Taiwan this weekend.

The Green Hornet added $15.4 million from 64 territories for a foreign total of $60 million. It performed well enough in holdover markets like Australia ($1.9 million) and Mexico ($1.7 million), and had strong first place openings in Singapore, Taiwan and Malaysia. However, it was a major disappointment in larger markets South Korea, where it opened in fifth place with $633,000, and Italy, where it debuted in eighth place with $612,000.

Tron Legacy grossed an estimated $12 million from 53 territories representing around 93 percent of the marketplace. It opened to $4.6 million in Germany, which was good for first place. This brought Tron's foreign haul to $196 million and its worldwide total (domestic plus foreign) to nearly $363 million, and the addition of France on Feb. 9 should help the movie reach the $400 million mark.

Black Swan had another great weekend, earning $11.6 million without any major openings. Holdover territories were down a light eight percent on average. The movie dipped seven percent to $4.1 million in the U.K. and was up five percent to $2.9 million in Germany. The ballet thriller has so far earned $28.9 million overseas and is scheduled to debut in the Netherlands, South Africa and much of South America this weekend.

The King's Speech scored $11.3 million in 15 territories over the weekend to bring its foreign sum to $67.4 million. After holding the top spot in the U.K. in its first three weekends there, it finally dropped to second with $5.8 million. It also added another $1.7 million in Australia. While The King's Speech has been successful in the U.K. and Australia, those countries are both English-speaking with some vested interest in a story about the British monarchy. The movie's $1.3 million fifth place start in Italy was decent, though a better indicator of its long-term prospects will come from its France opening this weekend.

After putting up impressive numbers in France and Spain in previous weekends, Hereafter had slow starts in its new territories and grossed just $10.2 million in 32 markets. The movie opened in seventh place in the U.K. with less than $1 million and debuted outside the Top Ten in Germany with $414,000 (though it's 143 locations could be considered a limited release there). These openings were better than a number of recent Clint Eastwood projects, though, indicating that his movies might not be popular in the U.K. and Germany. Hereafter did hold onto first place in France ($3.8 million) and Spain ($2.6 million), and has thus far earned a total of $42.3 million overseas.
