WB Adds 'Rock,' 'Jack' to June 2012
Warner Bros. Pictures made two big Summer 2012 release date announcements this afternoon, adding musical Rock of Ages and fantasy adventure Jack the Giant Killer to the June calendar.

Rock of Ages was set for June 1 against the Untitled Judd Apatow Comedy. The movie is an adaptation of the musical of the same name, which debuted in Los Angeles in 2006 before moving to New York and earning five Tony nominations in 2009. Director Adam Shankman previously guided the 2007 adaptation of Hairspray, which raked in $118.8 million. Shankman has assembled a high-profile cast headlined by Tom Cruise, who will make his musical debut, and also starring Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin and Mary J. Blige. The play Rock of Ages is set in the 1980s and uses classic rock hits from the era, and its likely the movie follows suit on both counts. The last musical to make a major splash, Mamma Mia!, followed a similar course back in summer 2008, setting its story to familiar old music (ABBA), and it grossed $144.1 million.

Two weeks later, Jack the Giant Killer will debut opposite the Adam Sandler-Andy Samberg comedy I Hate You, Dad. Directed by Bryan Singer and starring Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy) in the titular role, the movie is a loose remake of 1962's Jack the Giant Killer, which was itself a loose adaptation of the British fairy tale of the same name. The plot is essentially an updated, action-packed version of the Jack and the Beanstalk story. Jack the Giant Killer's supporting cast includes Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy, Eleanor Tomlinson and Ewan McGregor, and the movie will open in both 3D and traditional theaters.

Prior to this announcement, the only movie on Warner Bros. Summer 2012 dance card was the highly-anticipated sequel The Dark Knight Rises (July 20). This likely rounds out the list of the studio's would-be Summer 2012 blockbusters, though there's still a chance another one sneaks in during the coming months.
